Having had to postpone this hike in January, due to extreme heat, we were relieved that we were able to redo this outing in more suitable weather in March. Although we drove towards Paarl in gray drizzly weather, on the other side of du Toitskloof tunnel it was a different scene – cool, dry and pleasant hiking weather.
Libby arranged safe parking and transport shuttling, with kind assistance from Du Kloof Lodge nearby, due to reports of car break-ins and vandalism in the Cape Nature Limietberg car park near the tunnel during the festive season.
It is many years since most of us had done Elandspad, and it was wonderful to hike, boulder hop and swim in this beautiful kloof again. The path is still ok but the pines are starting to encroach on the fynbos. We stayed in the main valley and unfortunately were not able to go up the tributary this time. Some people saw an otter in the river.
There were two medical issues which needed attention during the hike, but everyone completed the hike and went to the du Kloof Lodge for a welcome drink afterwards. They even had a band playing for us! A lovely full day out.
